Brooke Mahaffey’s Story of Resilience and Patriotism for Military Kids

Brooke-n-family

My name is Brooke Mahaffey and I am a Marine Corps spouse of nearly 18 years, a mother of 3, an elementary school educator, and a published children's book author. Together my family has endured six PCS moves and three deployments. We are currently enjoying living in beautiful and sunny San Diego.

Over the years, as my children grew older, each PCS move became more and more difficult. Saying goodbye to their home, friends, and school never got easier. As a mom, I wasn’t always sure how to help my kids navigate the feelings and emotions that come with the “military family” title.

This inspired me to write my first children’s book, "I'm A Dandelion: A PCS Story For Military Children."

The comparison of military children to the dandelion flower inspired the book title. It is a heartwarming and relatable book perfect for young military kids navigating the challenges of frequent moves and adapting to new environments. The book follows the story of young “dandelions” as they go through their own journey of growth, resilience, and adaptation.

I hope this book will inspire and encourage military children to embrace their own inner strength and help them see that just like the dandelion, they too can bloom wherever they are planted!

My 2nd book, “The Day Uncle Sam Lost His Yankee Doodle Dandy” was inspired by my love for the Independence Day holiday. As a military spouse and patriotic person, I’ve always loved the old fashion traditions that come with celebrating the 4th of July. It’s a lighthearted but educational story that takes Uncle Sam on a journey through some of the country's most historic landmarks.
